HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e

The OfficeJet Pro 9125e is the best of the traditional cartridge inkjets in our guide — and the one that best illustrates why that whole category scores in amber. It’s a genuinely capable, feature-rich office all-in-one: 22 pages per minute in black, a two-sided document feeder, fax, a touchscreen, and Ethernet. But it runs on ink cartridges, and that’s the catch — a color page costs around 16 cents versus a fraction of that on an ink tank, and its supply flexibility is limited (detailed below). For light, feature-focused use it’s a strong compact office printer; if you print much color, a tank will cost you far less.

Category Deep-Dives

Running Cost / Cost-Per-Page

6.5 / 10 25% weighting

Running cost is the reason a cartridge inkjet lands in amber, and the 9125e is no exception. On HP’s genuine ink it prints a black page for about 3.99 cents and a color page for roughly 15.99 cents. The black cost is reasonable; the color cost is the sticking point — it’s several times what an ink-tank printer charges for the same page. If you print color with any regularity, that difference adds up quickly.

There are two ways to soften it. High-yield HP 936e cartridges lower the per-page cost versus the standard 936, and HP’s Instant Ink subscription — optional on this model — can reduce cost for a steady monthly volume, though it adds a recurring charge and is worth weighing against your actual print habits. Even so, on our cost-weighted framework, a cartridge inkjet can’t match a tank, and that’s what holds the score here. Verify current supply and subscription prices before buying.

Bottom line on running cost: Reasonable black cost but expensive color at about 16 cents a page. High-yield ink and the optional Instant Ink subscription help, but a tank is far cheaper if you print much.

Speed & Paper Handling

7.5 / 10 15% weighting

The 9125e is quick for an inkjet, rated at 22 pages per minute in black and 18 in color — fast enough that everyday jobs don’t drag, and color prints only a little slower than black. It’s not laser-fast on long text runs, but for the mixed document-and-color work this printer is built for, the pace is comfortable.

Paper handling is a real strength: automatic two-sided printing, a 35-sheet two-sided ADF that scans and copies both sides of a page, and a 250-sheet main tray. It is a dual-pass feeder — it flips each sheet rather than reading both sides at once, so duplex scanning runs at about half the simplex speed — but it still puts the 9125e ahead of the budget printers in our guide for multi-page scanning and copying, and makes it a capable little document hub.

Bottom line on speed & paper handling: Brisk 22/18 ppm inkjet speed with a 2-sided (dual-pass) ADF and auto-duplex printing. Capable and quick for everyday office work.

Features & Connectivity

7.5 / 10 15% weighting

This is the 9125e’s standout, and it’s why it tops the cartridge-inkjet tier. It’s a complete office all-in-one — print, scan, copy, and fax — with a 2.7-inch color touchscreen, the two-sided ADF, and full connectivity: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB, plus HP’s mobile and app printing. For a compact inkjet, that’s a lot of capability.

Batch two-sided scanning, faxing, wired or wireless sharing, PC-free copying from the touchscreen — it’s all here, in a smaller footprint than the office lasers. If your priority is a full-featured, space-efficient office machine and your print volume is light to moderate, the feature set is excellent.

Bottom line on features & connectivity: A complete, compact office all-in-one — print, scan, copy, fax, touchscreen, duplex ADF — with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and USB. The best-equipped cartridge inkjet in the guide.

Consumable Freedom & Reliability

5.5 / 10 15% weighting

This is the 9125e’s lowest score, for two supply-related reasons. First, as a cartridge printer it lacks the flexibility of a refillable tank — you’re replacing sealed cartridges rather than topping up from cheap bottles. Third-party and remanufactured 936-series ink exists, but that leads to the second, HP-specific point.

HP printers use a firmware feature HP calls Dynamic Security that can prevent the use of non-HP cartridges on models made after December 1, 2016 — and that includes this printer. In practice, a firmware update can cause the printer to reject a non-HP cartridge, so buyers who plan to use third-party ink should be aware of it and manage firmware updates accordingly. On reliability, it’s a solid, well-built office machine, but as with any inkjet the print head needs the occasional page to avoid clogging if it sits unused. The score here reflects the documented supply constraints, and moves this sub-score only — not the printer’s quality, speed, or feature scores.

Bottom line on consumable freedom & reliability: Cartridge supplies are less flexible than a tank, and supply flexibility is further limited for third-party-ink users (see above) — the documented reasons this is the printer’s lowest score.

Value & Warranty

6.5 / 10 10% weighting

The 9125e’s value depends heavily on how much you print. It’s affordable to buy and packs a lot of features into a compact body, so for light, feature-focused use it’s reasonable value. But the more you print — especially color — the more the cartridge running cost erodes that value, and a higher-upfront ink tank starts to win on total cost of ownership.

It carries a 1-year limited warranty, standard for the category. The honest guidance: buy the 9125e if you want a full-featured, space-saving office inkjet and your volume is modest; if you print a lot, look at an ink tank instead — you’ll spend more up front and save far more on ink. The optional Instant Ink subscription can shift that math for steady, predictable volume.

Bottom line on value & warranty: Good value for light, feature-focused use; weaker the more you print, where a tank wins on running cost. Standard one-year warranty.
