Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550

The EcoTank Photo ET-8550 is our pick for anyone who wants photo-grade output without photo-grade running costs. Its six-color ink system — with a dedicated gray and photo black — earns the highest print-quality score in our entire lineup, and because it’s a refillable supertank, borderless photos cost a few cents apiece instead of the small fortune a cartridge photo printer charges. It also prints wide-format, up to 13 inches across. The trade-off is that it’s built for images, not paperwork: there’s no automatic document feeder and no fax, and it costs more than a standard office tank. But for a home office that also does creative or photo work, nothing else here comes close on quality-per-page.

Running Cost / Cost-Per-Page

9.0 / 10 25% weighting

The ET-8550’s headline number is what it costs to print a photo. Epson puts it at roughly 4 cents for a borderless 4×6, against about 40 cents on a cartridge photo printer — that one is Epson’s own published figure rather than ours, because a six-ink photo print isn’t something the ISO page-yield maths behind our other numbers can model. Because it’s a refillable supertank fed from Epson 552 bottles, that low cost holds across its six inks, and plain-paper documents stay tank-cheap too — about 0.36 cents for a black page and roughly 1.42 cents for a color graphics page. As with all supply costs, these move over time, so verify before you buy.

It scores a notch below the pure office tanks on this measure, not above them, for a simple reason: a six-color photo system uses more, and more specialized, ink than a four-color document printer, so its cost-per-page — while excellent by any normal standard — isn’t quite the rock-bottom of an ET-4950. Judged as a photo printer, though, its running cost is in a different universe from cartridge rivals, which is exactly the point of buying it.

Bottom line on running cost: Photo prints for a few cents instead of dozens, and documents still tank-cheap. A hair behind the four-color office tanks on plain paper, but transformative next to any cartridge photo printer.

Speed & Paper Handling

7.5 / 10 15% weighting

For a photo-oriented machine the ET-8550 keeps up well on documents, rated at about 16 pages per minute in black and 12 in color, with automatic two-sided printing. Photo output is necessarily slower — high-quality borderless prints take their time, as they do on any photo printer — but that’s expected and not what you buy this printer to rush.

Paper handling is built around versatility rather than volume: it accepts wide-format media up to 13 inches, has front and rear feed paths for different stocks, and even prints directly onto discs. What it lacks is a document feeder — every copy or scan is placed on the flatbed one sheet at a time — which is a real limitation for anyone doing multi-page paperwork, and part of why this is a photo specialist rather than an office workhorse.

Bottom line on speed & paper handling: Solid document speed and auto-duplex, with standout wide-format and specialty-media support. No ADF, so multi-page copying and scanning is one sheet at a time.

Features & Connectivity

6.5 / 10 15% weighting

This is the ET-8550’s weakest category, and the reason is straightforward: it’s designed as a photo printer, so it omits the automatic document feeder and fax that a full office all-in-one includes. It prints, scans, and copies, but the missing ADF means it can’t batch-scan or batch-copy a stack, which a paperwork-heavy office will feel.

What it does have is genuinely good. A large 4.3-inch color touchscreen makes photo selection and editing easy, there’s an SD card slot for printing straight from a camera card, disc printing for labeling CDs and DVDs, and the full connectivity suite — Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Ethernet, and USB — plus mobile printing. If your priority is images rather than office automation, the feature set is well-judged; measured against a fax-and-ADF office machine, it scores lower here by design.

Bottom line on features & connectivity: Great photo-focused extras — big touchscreen, SD slot, disc printing, full wired and wireless connectivity — but no ADF or fax, which caps its score against full office all-in-ones.

Consumable Freedom & Reliability

9.0 / 10 15% weighting

Like every EcoTank, the ET-8550 is refilled from standard Epson 552 bottles rather than cartridges, so there’s no chip to authenticate and no firmware behavior that restricts your supplies — the low per-print cost is straightforward and durable. This is the supply-flexibility dimension our framework scores on its own, and a bottle-fed tank sits at the top of it.

On reliability, Epson’s EcoTank line has an established track record, and the six-color system is well proven in this and the related ET-8500. As with any photo inkjet, running an occasional print keeps the six channels flowing and the head healthy — a non-issue if you print regularly. It carries a one-year limited warranty, standard for the category.

Bottom line on consumable freedom & reliability: Refillable six-color tanks mean no cartridge lock-in and a durable cost advantage, backed by Epson’s proven EcoTank reliability.

Value & Warranty

7.0 / 10 10% weighting

The ET-8550 is one of the more expensive printers in our guide to buy, and that premium up-front price is why it scores in the middle here rather than at the top. It’s also the only way to get its combination of six-color photo quality, wide-format printing, and supertank running costs in one machine — so the question is whether you’ll use those strengths.

If you print photos or wide-format work with any regularity, the math favors it quickly: the per-print savings over a cartridge photo printer are large, and they compound. If you only ever print documents, you’re paying for photo capability you won’t use, and a cheaper office tank like the ET-4950 is the smarter value. It carries a one-year limited warranty, standard for the class.

Bottom line on value & warranty: A premium purchase price that pays back fast for photo and wide-format users, but overkill if you only print documents. Standard one-year warranty.

About the Manufacturer

EcoTank
Epson — EcoTank Photo
Seiko Epson · Cartridge-Free Printing

Epson, part of Japan’s Seiko Epson Corporation, is one of the four major printer makers and the company that brought the refillable ink-tank printer into the mainstream. Its EcoTank line replaces disposable cartridges with high-capacity tanks refilled from bottles — the design that reset expectations for what printing should cost.

The EcoTank Photo models sit at the top of that range. Where the office EcoTanks use four inks tuned for documents, the ET-8550 and its smaller sibling the ET-8500 add a photo black and a gray for a full six-color set aimed at image quality, and the ET-8550 adds wide-format printing up to 13 inches. It’s Epson’s answer to the enthusiast photographer who was tired of cartridge costs.

For a home office that also does creative work, that pairing — genuine photo quality with supertank economics — is why the ET-8550 is our recommended photo printer, even as the document-focused ET-4950 leads our overall ranking.
