AU1060MA

The Aurora AU1060MA is the only P-5 high-security shredder in our home-office lineup, and it’s the machine to buy when you want the question of “could anyone reconstruct this?” settled permanently. It cuts paper into 5/64″ × 15/32″ particles — roughly 2,592 pieces per letter page, about ten times smaller than a typical cross-cut — backed by an exceptional 60-minute continuous run time and a 6-gallon pull-out bin. It’s a specialist, not an all-rounder: at 10 sheets per pass with no auto-feed and a conventional safety set, it gives up ground on throughput and refinement, which is why it lands at #5 rather than higher. But for client records, business financials, or anyone who simply wants maximum security, nothing else here comes close. It’s our Best for Maximum Security pick at 8.3.

Security Level

10.0 / 10 25% weighting

This is the only perfect security score in our entire shredder lineup, and it’s the entire reason the AU1060MA exists. It is the single P-5 machine we rate — the level above the P-4 micro-cut that the rest of our top picks reach. Under DIN 66399, P-5 caps particle area at 30 mm²; the AU1060MA cuts to 5/64″ × 15/32″ pieces (about 2×12 mm), which works out to roughly 2,592 particles per letter page — on the order of ten times smaller than a typical cross-cut, and roughly double the fragment count of even a good P-4 micro-cut.

The practical meaning is simple: at this particle size, reassembly stops being a research project and becomes effectively impossible for any adversary a household or small business would ever face. Where P-4 is the right standard for ordinary personal documents, P-5 is the standard organizations use for genuinely confidential material — client files, legal and medical records, business financials, anything where a breach has consequences beyond annoyance.

Because Security is the heaviest category in our framework at 25%, this 10.0 does a lot of work: it’s what lifts a machine with otherwise mid-pack capacity and safety scores all the way to #5 overall. If maximum security is your priority, you are buying exactly the right number here.

Bottom line on security: A genuine P-5, the highest security in our lineup and effectively unreconstructable — the one machine here built for confidential business and client records rather than ordinary household paper.

Capacity & Speed

7.0 / 10 20% weighting

This is the trade-off you accept for P-5 security, and it’s the most important thing to understand before buying. The good news is genuinely good: the AU1060MA runs a full 60 minutes continuously before its cool-down — tied for the longest duty cycle in our lineup, and a duty cycle that embarrasses machines costing more. If you sit down to destroy a banker’s box of confidential files, the motor will outlast your patience, not the other way around.

The limitation is throughput per pass. The AU1060MA takes only 10 sheets at a time and is manual-feed — there’s no auto-feed tray to load and walk away from. And P-5 cutting is inherently slower than P-4 or cross-cut, because the machine is making far more cuts per sheet. So while you can run it for a long time, you’re feeding it by hand, ten sheets at a time, the whole while. For a high-volume backlog, an auto-feed micro-cut machine like the Aurora AU120MA (120-sheet tray) clears paper far faster — it just doesn’t cut as small.

That tension is exactly why this lands at 7.0 rather than higher: a category-leading run time pulled back to mid-pack by modest per-pass capacity and a manual-only feed. It is the honest cost of the security you came for.

Bottom line on capacity: Outstanding 60-minute endurance, but a manual 10-sheet feed and slower P-5 cutting cap real-world throughput. Buy it for sensitivity, not for clearing big stacks quickly — for that, an auto-feed machine wins.

Reliability & Jam Resistance

8.5 / 10 20% weighting

The AU1060MA scores well on reliability, second in the lineup only to the Fellowes LX210, and the 60-minute run time is a big reason why. A motor rated to run a full hour without overheating has substantial thermal headroom for the shorter sessions most home offices actually run — you’re rarely pushing it near its limit, which is exactly the condition under which shredders last. Long-duty motors that loaf through typical use tend to age gracefully.

Jam handling is by anti-jam auto-reverse, which backs paper out when a jam begins, paired with overload protection and a clear set of status LEDs (standby, overheat, bin-full, overload, door-open) that tell you precisely why the machine stopped. Being manual-feed actually helps here relative to its auto-feed sibling: fewer moving parts — no grip rollers or feed sensors to misfire — means fewer things to go wrong.

The reason it’s 8.5 and not higher is the same distinction that separates every non-Fellowes machine from the LX210: auto-reverse is reactive, clearing jams after they start, whereas Fellowes’ 100% Jam Proof measures sheet thickness and prevents the over-stuffed pass in the first place. With a 10-sheet limit on a P-5 machine, though, jams are easy to avoid simply by not over-feeding.

Bottom line on reliability: A 60-minute motor with real thermal headroom, simple manual-feed mechanics, and useful status diagnostics make this a dependable long-term machine — just keep the cutters oiled and don’t crowd the slot.

Value & Versatility

8.0 / 10 15% weighting

Value is a real strength here, and it’s best understood by what P-5 security normally costs. High-security shredders are traditionally commercial equipment priced well out of home-office range; the AU1060MA brings genuine P-5 down to a price an individual or small business can justify. Measured against other ways to get P-5, it’s a clear bargain — that’s the Aurora playbook, and it applies here as strongly as anywhere in the lineup.

On versatility it’s more focused than flashy. It shreds credit cards and paper clips in addition to paper, and the 6-gallon pull-out bin empties cleanly. What it doesn’t do is the convenience stuff: no auto-feed tray, no CD/DVD slot, and the 10-sheet capacity keeps it deliberately narrow. The 8.0 reflects excellent value for the security tier tempered by a feature set built around one job rather than many.

Bottom line on value: The most affordable honest path to P-5 security we’ve found, with card and clip handling and a tidy pull-out bin. You’re paying for particle size, not convenience features — and for the buyer who needs P-5, that’s the right allocation.

Safety

7.0 / 10 10% weighting

Safety is the AU1060MA’s softest category, and like its siblings it comes down to the absence of electronic touch-sensing. There’s no equivalent to Fellowes’ SafeSense, which cuts power the instant fingers reach the paper opening. Instead the AU1060MA uses a conventional protection set: auto start/stop, a door-open sensor that halts the cutters when the cabinet is opened, plus overload and overheat cutoffs surfaced through the status LEDs.

That’s a complete and standard safety package — but it’s an open manual slot with no proximity sensing, and on a machine whose whole purpose is aggressive high-security cutting, we weight that gap a little harder. It scores 7.0 rather than the 7.5 we gave the auto-feed AU120MA largely because that sibling keeps hands away from the cutters during its main job behind a closed lid, whereas every page here goes in through a slot you’re feeding by hand.

Bottom line on safety: Adequate, conventional protections — auto stop, door sensor, overload and overheat cutoffs — but no touch-sensing shutoff. In a home with small children or pets, the SafeSense-equipped Fellowes LX210 is the safer choice.

Noise

8.0 / 10 10% weighting

Aurora rates the AU1060MA for ultra-quiet operation, and that’s plausible for a machine that cuts at a measured, deliberate pace rather than tearing through stacks quickly — high-security micro-cutting tends to be more of a steady grind than a roar. For a unit that may run for long confidential sessions, keeping the noise down matters: a quiet machine in the office gets used during the workday instead of postponed.

As with every model in this guide, we score Noise from quiet-operation engineering claims cross-checked against owner-reported experience under load, not from a single decibel figure manufacturers don’t publish consistently. On that basis the AU1060MA earns a solid 8.0. It loses the small edge its auto-feed sibling enjoys — with manual feeding you’re standing over the machine while it runs, so its sound is closer to you than an auto-feed unit you can leave the room for — but the underlying operation is genuinely on the quiet side.

Bottom line on noise: Quiet by design and pleasant to run for long sessions, though manual feeding keeps you next to it. Comfortably above the budget tier, just shy of Fellowes’ purpose-built SilentShred models.

About the Manufacturer

Aurora Corp of America
Shredders & Office Equipment

Aurora is the duty-cycle and value champion of the home-office shredder market. Where Fellowes leads on safety and jam-prevention engineering, Aurora competes on capability per dollar — long continuous run times and, in the AU1060MA’s case, genuine high-security cutting at a price the premium brands reserve for far less aggressive machines. Three of the five top-rated shredders in our lineup are Aurora models.

The AU1060MA is Aurora’s high-security flagship — the security specialist of its range, sitting apart from the value-volume models like the auto-feed AU120MA (#3 in our rankings) and the manual AU1210MA workhorse. All three share the brand’s 60-minute-class motors and pull-out baskets; the AU1060MA is the one that trades throughput and convenience for the smallest particle size Aurora makes.

The familiar Aurora trade applies: fewer safety and acoustic refinements than the premium brands — no touch-sensing shutoff — in exchange for substantially more capability, here in the form of a security level that normally costs much more. For a buyer whose priority is destroying sensitive material thoroughly and affordably, that trade is the right one.
